Infographic – Scientific imaging

This issue of the EPFL's magazine Dimension is dedicated to scientific imaging and the tools that allow us to see the invisible. The infographic aims to provide a glimpse into some breakthroughs that have expanded humanity’s field of vision and the images they have enabled us to capture.

We have designed a grid overlaying a timeline from the year 1600 to 2030, and a scale of dimensions ranging from the infinitesimally small to the infinitely large. The intervals between years and distances are not linear to leave room for images. With the scale of dimensions ranging from 10^-19 to 10^26, we decided to concretely show how many zeros this represents, in order to make the dimensions in meters more tangible.
